Tower House is so named, as the cottage is the front part of the Grade II listed church with the church tower. Located in part of the conservation area known as Chapel Hill and How Head, there has been a church on the site since 1550, but the current structure dates from 1812 when it took on a more Gothic style. Surrounded by the village’s oldest houses, Tower House benefits from being in a quiet location surrounded by shared gardens, while only a short walk away from the many shops and restaurants Ambleside has to offer.

The cottage is comfortably furnished, carefully mixing modern luxuries while retaining original features, from the solid studded door to the arched church windows. Set over three floors, the property is spacious and quirky. The twin room on the top floor will capture children’s imagination as they look out of their bedroom window over the castellated roof to the fells.

Ambleside sits on the northerly end of England’s longest lake, Windermere, so why not enjoy a cruise, or if you are feeling a bit more energetic, why not hire a row boat. Just down the road is the Armitt Museum and Library, which houses a large number of exquisite botanical watercolours donated by the artist herself, Beatrix Potter. Across the road from here is the Bridge House, a tiny two-room, two-storey house dating from the 17th century, and once home to eight people! Beach 20 miles. Shop 250 yards, pub and restaurant 150 yards.

The garden is shared.

Lovely cosy cottage right in the centre of things.
Lovely cosy cottage right in the centre of things. Spotlessly clean with everything you could need in a home from home. Only slight issue is parking. Private parking to the property is made via a public parking area which was often clogged with cars obstructing the already narrow entrance. Would still recommend this property.

Situated up a hill with tight parking, however an unusual property.
Situated up a hill with tight parking, however an unusual property. Would have benefitted from WiFi and a few basics within the property like enough washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, more toilet rolls, recycling facilities - just a consideration for future. Lovely walks straight outside and in surrounding area.

The accommodation was spacious enough for us three adults.
The accommodation was spacious enough for us three adults. Being a conversion of an old building it creaked quite a bit - even when other parts of the building were in use. Central heating was a bit odd in that it was either off or on with no easy way to control it (i.e. timer and thermostat). Certainly agree with others that the parking area needs a bit of sorting out, but as long you are careful and the adjacent spaces are used properly then it was not a major issue. Had a mixed week weather-wise, so it was nice to have a comfortable place to stay on the odd day when going out walking was not possible. It was close enough to town to walk in (but Peggy Hill is quite steep), so shopping, eating out, and a trip to the cinema were all possible without driving.

Fantastic home very central to all that Ambleside has to offer.
Fantastic home very central to all that Ambleside has to offer. On a steep slope to work off the calories from the beers in the two quaint pubs less than 50 yards away. Car access could have been easier due to lots of parked cars in car park just outside. No spare bulbs and a couple of lamps were not working. Would rebook if we return to the area as location was so convenient.

The house is lovely and in an excellent location, just minutes from the centre of Ambleside -shops, pubs, bus stops, restaurants. The house is comfortable, large rooms, bedrooms and bathroom and the kitchen is mostly well equipped (strangely only had 4 cups for 5 guests). The website says there are lawns surrounding the property. There aren't. The grass surrounding the graves outside has not been cut this summer and it was impossible to sit anywhere. The website says there is a patio. Guests in Number 5 rather aggressively stopped us having access to this, saying it was there private property-not according to the website. There is no wifi, which we thought was behind the times really. The place does need a good clean -too many cobwebs in corners and the floor needed mopping. One last negative - there are no recycling facilities - no bins to recycle paper, tins and bottles. This was particularly frustrating as the recycling van arrived on Thursday. We had to take items to the recycling plant on the way out of Ambleside. This needs urgent rectification as it is unacceptable not to recycle in today's world.
