About this property
Garden Cottage at The Olives
The Garden Cottage is one of two listings at The Olives, near Yankalilla in the heart of South Australia's famed Fleurieu Peninsula. It is architect-designed and built in 2015, just one hour by road from Adelaide and 30 mins from the McLaren Vale wine district, The Fleurieu is a drawcard for nature lovers and foodies from around the world and boasts superior sporting facilities such as The Links golf course at Lady Bay.
The Garden Cottage nestles in the grounds of The Olives, featuring the Heritage House, a National Trust listed home built in the 1840s/1850s. It is in an idyllic setting for those who want to just wash away the stresses of the city or use as a base to see and enjoy the attractions of SA's Fleurieu Peninsula.
There are two bedrooms; one with a King size bed; the other with two King singles which can be converted into a double. There is also a sofa bed in the central lounge area which can be used to increase capacity to six if required.
The central lounge also has kitchen facilities for tea or coffee (Nespresso capsules provided), a toaster, a microwave oven and an electric frypan.
Guests are welcome to use the facilities of the entire four-acre garden, including the barbecue and swimming pool, which may be shared if guests are occupying the Heritage House. If pool privacy is desired, please negotiate times of use with other guests.
The Olives nestles in a valley about 3 km south of Yankalilla. It was one of the first buildings in the area, with its rear section built of "mud and pug" construction in the 1840s - within a decade of the settlement of South Australia. The imposing neo-Georgian facade and front section was added in 1859. The building was restored in 1975 and has recently undergone further renovations.
There are no immediate neighbours in what is a beautiful, bucolic farming area. Yankalilla is 73 km from Adelaide via the Main South Road which continues on to the Kangaroo Island ferry at Cape Jervis. On entering the Yankalilla township, veer left at the Y junction, following the Victor Harbor sign for 1.5 km until you see the speed derestriction sign. Turn right into Doctors Hill Road (unsealed) and follow it for 1.5 km until you arrive at the Salt Creek Road t-junction. Turn right for 350 m then turn right into The Olives gateway. It is a little off the beaten track, but that's what makes it so unique and enjoyable.
The Olives and its garden is a self-contained destination for those who bring their own supplies and want to relax in perfect peace and solitude, Guests will need a vehicle if they wish to tour the district and eat at a variety of restaurants and cafes at Yankalilla (3km) or Normanville (5 km). Other dining options are a little further afield.

We had such a great stay! What a beautiful property this is. Excellent amenities and the garden is absolutely gorgeous. We made magpie friends, swam, barbecued, and generally chilled. Thank you!

Thank you Marie, for such a lovely message. We love our garden, too, and it's great to hear that you and your party enjoyed it as well. Best wishes and come again! M
The Olives was lovely & clean & area was quiet. However, the Stayz listing was misleading in that what we thought we hired (Heritage cottage) was NOT where we were & what was meant to be private was not as you are in close proximity to other guests & the pool is shared with strangers & you can hear & see each other.
Had a lovely stay. Beautiful property and spot to relax in. Great facilities and the pool was ideal. Location is great and convenient to town centre and a very short drive to Normanville. Also has the most comfiest beds!
Wonderful relaxing break. All the little luxuries taken care of, with super comfy beds, a beautiful pool and gorgeous gardens to wander around in. Can’t wait to come back.

A little piece of paradise with beautiful gardens and flowers and trees. Very quiet and lovely to see the ducks about the place. I would live there forever if I could!

Dina, thank you. You are so kind. You're welcome back any time! M
The owner said think of it as ‘Tuscany in the Gums ‘ the garden cottage certainly lived upto this. What a serene sanctuary this is - we felt like we had our own extensive private gardens stroll around and admire the different views. The beds were comfy and pool an added bonus. Glenis, Kenton and Mark all very friendly and helpful .

We are still unable to ascertain how this unfortunate mix-up occurred, and we apologise again, but Sascha, please don't forget you are invited to come again - half price. Mark

A beautiful cottage set in tranquil gardens. Lots of places for hide and seek! Great pool!
Mark and Kenton were very accommodating to our group. Excellent communication.
Very comfortable property close to everything, yet far enough for some peace and quiet. Highly recommended!

Thank you for your kind remarks, Sally. We're glad you enjoyed your stay. M
Gorgeous gardens even during winter - our two young boys loved exploring and the grass area near the pond was perfect for soccer. Close by to Yankalilla and with the picturesque Second Valley nearby. Great for a relaxing weekend to unwind in peace and tranquillity. Mark responded quickly to any enquiries we had and made sure our stay was comfortable. Would definitely recommend for couples or family with up to two children.
