What a lovely place to unplug and have some time away in the mountains. Appreciated all the details and rope beds were very comfortable. Worth the stay!
Our family enjoyed staying at the Forgeman House. We loved the area and it was a unique experience and one that our kids will remember. Be ready to be immersed in history. We loved the very nice touches and the responsiveness of the host.
Lovely space to unplug and be present. Perfectly historic with modern conveniences. The fireplace was cozy and the beds comfortably. We enjoyed hiking and the wildlife preserve. 10/10 would recommend for the family looking to slow down.

Historical Thurmont Escape
We had a great time. We thought the new addition to meet modern needs blended beautifully with the historical home. We appreciated the hospitality of our host and the volunteers.
I spent a wonderful few days in the Catoctin Mountain area, hiking and learning about the local history. The house is really unique and full of rich history. Be ready for some basic furniture, but get immersed into the theme of the property. Elizabeth was extremely responsive and helpful. I definitely recommend a stay here!
My family rented this charming little house for two nights to celebrate Christmas. We loved it! It’s a historical building with modern amenities. It has a small kitchen so cooking for 6 was a bit challenging but where there’s a will, there’s a way! We loved that the Catoctin Mt Park was right down the road. Would recommend staying here for a unique experience!
House is charming. Short walk to museum and trails. Note that in keeping with the historical ambiance the lighting in the original house, including the bedrooms, is somewhat dim. The kitchen and bathroom are well-lit, and we’ll stocked. Host was kind enough to arrange for a guide at the museum for us even though it was closed.
The property was great -- having the modern facilities of the kitchen/bath inside such an authentically historic building was something I've never experienced but enjoyed. My family:mother and father both in their eighties, brother and sister in law and nephews, ages 9 & 14 were deeply impressed with the house and neighborhood of Catoctin Furnace. We had a memorable time in Thurmont. Thank you for hosting us!
Appreciate the historical information and pamphlets of other attractions provided. Love the balance between modern and antique/rustic look. The room lights might be a little dark than we liked but probably personal taste. The only real issue we had is the smell on the bed at the main bedroom downstairs. It’s like a musty smell mixed with sweat, probably because the bedding had not been aired/dried properly. Not sure if it was intentional to mask it, but all the bedding linen had strong fragrance. But the smell still transferred to pillows placed on that bed. It’s the only complaint but I think it’s a major one since you smell this when you sleep.
My daughter wanted to stay somewhere close to Burkittsville, MD for her birthday because she had recently seen The Blair Witch Project for the first time. I found this listing and thought it was perfect! I read the listing carefully and did make note of the period-specific bedding and accommodations, so we weren’t surprised at check in. The kitchen and the bathroom were very modern and had everything we needed. Elizabeth was very helpful and responsive to any questions I had. I would love to stay here again if given the chance.
The house was neat and the modern updates were well done to keep it historically accurate. Linens and other supplied needs were easy to find and plentiful. All that said, this property is kept historically accurate. The lighting in the original house is kept to electric candle light level and there isn't really anywhere to gather and visit. There is nowhere to comfortably sit (again, completely understand historically accurate). The beds are much the same and quite firm. I appreciate the historical keeping of the house and it is a unique experience to stay. The area is also lovely. Overall, it is very well done for what it is just be prepared for what you are booking.

A blast from the past
We booked this to stay at while attending a wedding weekend. Check in was easy when we arrived we found the kitchen area to be at a lovely temperature. The rest of the house was warm and the upstairs was stifling hot. Tried calling the rental contact and had to leave a message. While waiting for a call back we figured out the central air. Good thing as we didn’t get a call back until the next day. Everything about the house is historically correct, including the beds. If you are looking for luxury, this is NOT the place for you. Two bedrooms have full sized beds. They have rope box springs for the thin mattresses. The rope creaks on the wood frame with every move you make. Upstairs are two twin beds or so we thought. The one is a twin while the other is the width of a twin but only about 4 feet long. Perfect if you have smaller children but we were all adults. Overall a nice clean place to stay. The kitchen and bathroom are modern and well stocked. I don’t think we would stay here again but if you like living history you will find it here.

Hi Kathryn, we passed your comments on to the homeowner who would like to share the following: Our goal is to ensure that our guests have an exceptional stay with us and provide high standards of hospitality. We appreciate your review and we're genuinely sorry that the property didn't meet your expectations.
- We aim for transparency and our property information clearly states that The Forgeman’s House is not a typical overnight destination. While featuring modern amenities like a stylish bathroom with a shower, a cozy gas fireplace, and even a convenient dishwasher, stepping into this space takes you straight into an 1820 home. Antique furniture and handcrafted reproductions fill the space, providing an authentic atmosphere. The traditional roped beds, complete with modern mattresses, offer a unique sleep experience that you and your group will always remember. We'll make sure your beds are perfectly prepared, ensuring a comfortable night's rest on these special beds.
- After we were contacted by you, we immediately reached out to our Guest Contact Theresa, and it appears she didn't receive a call from you. This is truly unfortunate as she was the designated on-call person for the property during your stay.
- The HVAC system functions perfectly well and we're unsure of the concern you had with it. We have direct access to the digital HVAC controls, and on that specific day, the settings were at 70 degrees with 62% humidity that day within the historic dwelling.
With the exception of this review, all our other reviews have been glowing 5-star ratings with successful stays. We do all we can to make the best possible stay, and we look forward to this property hosting many satisfied guests.

decent
The stay was decent.
My booking date I arrived, and the yard was filled with cars and the house was filled with people from the neighborhood practicing music. The loc box was open.
I had no communication with the owner or host etc. One guy said they didn't know the property was rented. We waited for everyone to leave.
Honestly, I liked the property. It was great. A little extreme with the old fashion style. One of the beds was very noisy every time every turn you make while sleeping.
The Sunday a guy came snooping around the yard and seemed annoyed a outdoor chair was on the porch. Then
after the stay a few days later the owner Elizabeth contact me about a lost outdoor chair. This annoyed me very much as the advertisement clearly states to make use of the porch.
Not sure what was the bases of the lost chair would hate to think that was because we were a colored family.
I told her to double check the property as we didnt take anything and I haven't hear back from her.
I wouldn't rent back this property for that reason.

Hi Tajeram, we want our guests to rest easy when they stay with us, and we apologize if you experienced some issues during your trip. We followed up with the homeowner after reading your feedback, and they wanted to share the following:
- We run a volunteer organization for the museum and allow a musical group to practice in our Collier's Log House on Friday evenings as part of our community outreach program. Unfortunately, the group found that the electricity was off in the Collier's Log House.
- Without checking with us first, the group entered our other cabin, the Forgeman's House you had reserved, assuming it was available for them to use while they practiced their music.
- This was a very unfortunate mistake and we have put internal safety procedures in place to ensure that this never happens again. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and misunderstanding.
- We try our best to accommodate and provide a great environment for guests, but sometimes external factors are simply out of our control. The safety of our guests will always be our highest priority.
We encourage guests to reach out to the Guest Contact with any issues so that we can address your concerns quickly and encourage a comfortable stay!
We thoroughly enjoyed staying in this historical home! We were so impressed how the decor was true to the historical period the house was built yet it was so comfortable. Of particular interest was the museum in living room of all the artifacts found on the property dating back 100-200 years! We look forward to staying here again on our next visit to the area!

Bijzonder mooi verblijf
Heel speciaal om in zo mooi gerestaureerde historische woning te mogen verblijven. Heel sfeervol.
A beautiful, well equipped, spacious, and peaceful home just a few minutes from Catoctin Mountain National Park and Cunningham Falls State Park. It's very clean and retains its historic character—there are small, fascinating exhibits about history and archaeology in the home itself—without sacrificing modern conveniences. Not far from Frederick, and within an hour's drive of Gettysburg and Antietam battlefields. Also, the historic iron furnace and accompanying museum, just across the road, are well worth exploring. Enthusiastically recommend.
