Thurne is a pretty conservation village set in the Broads National park and is at the centre of some of the most stunning natural scenery in the Broadland landscape. The village is home to the iconic Thurne drainage mill, staithe, thatched church, small shop (seasonal opening), children’s play area, and pub/restaurant. There are excellent walks right from the doorstep and some outstanding sandy beaches, including the Winterton Dunes Nature Reserve and Horsey are within a 15 minute drive. Norwich with its castle and a huge array of shops and restaurants is only 30 minutes' drive away. Nearby Caister Castle offers an interesting day out and the Hickling Broad marshes and RSPB nature reserve are truly worth a visit. Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden has 130 acres of wildlife and woodland gardens including a private waterway, with daily boat trips from Apr-Oct. For exploring the Broads by boat, there are numerous hire firms locally that offer day-boats with Potter Heigham only a few miles away.
There are shops, bank, post office, butcher, Co-Op and takeaway in Acle (5 miles) and a Tesco supermarket in Stalham.
Norfolk offers an enormous range of attractions and we provide a range of tourist information leaflets in the cottage that cover lots of different and interesting ideas for days out. Norwich is less than 20 miles from the cottage and it offers the full spectrum of historical, cultural, entertainment and shopping facilities that you might expect from a major city.

Quiet retreat
The cottage was easy to find even though Norfolk at night is very dark indeed. It is a small, cosy and very properly equipped: everything is either beautiful or useful and often both. It has taken us a long time to realise that what we really like is a holiday house with walking routes from the door. We walked to Acle through the fields and along the river and had a top-notch meal at the Bridge Inn. We also took short drives in the countryside. The Broads were significantly flooded and some of the small roads were more than usually daunting. We saw barn owls, kingfishers, hares and thousands of pink-footed geese in straggling lines across the sky. The information about the house proved to be exact and helpful and the cottage provides a welcome retreat from both hustle and bustle.

Gorgeous cottage in the Broads
We loved our time at the old lion cottage, its was just what we were looking for and would definitely return, the village was and walks lovely. The cottage was very well appointed with comfortable beds, a lovely roaring fire to keep cosy and a spacious modern bathroom. Couldnt have asked for more! Also the little arrival treats were a total bonus

Wonderful home-from-home
We had a lovely week staying here. It is one of the nicest places we have stayed - everything has been thought of by the owners to make it homely, comfy and cozy. We stayed with our younger children who loved the games and garden. The village is nice too- with a good pub very close as well as the broads and walks right from the door. We’d definitely recommend this cottage as a great base for exploring this beautiful part of the country.

A great few days
An excellent property, very comfortable, a well equipped kitchen, good facilities and in an ideal situation. The area is wonderful for exploring, boating on the river, beaches galore particularly Winterton on Sea and a decent pub in the village. A great few days with our teenage grand daughters, great fun, thanks for your hospitality Rosie and Richard.

Home from home
Lovely cottage in a very picturesque village, great local pub with a good menu, lots of options for walks along the river or through fields of wheat. Also great location for visiting the north/north east Norfolk coastline and various nature reserves near by. Great holiday for a young family and would definitely stay in the cottage again.
