About this property
Bar Harbor Suite Under The Eaves
Our 1847 farmhouse is centrally located on Mt.Desert Island. A private entrance leads to an upstairs, sunlit, suite with a queen bedroom, living room with futon, private bath, and kitchenette with microwave, refrigerator, toaster, coffeemaker.
The house and stable, which once served the livery needs of Mt. Desert, are located on one of the major island roads. Acadia NP, Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor and the 'Quiet Side' of MDI are all close by, but be prepared for summer traffic.
The space
This newly renovated suite is tucked under the exposed, hand hewn beams of this 1847 Cape. Bands of the original timber-framing have been left exposed; wide plank floors have been newly refinished. The bathroom and kitchenette are brand new. The suite is bright, well-lit, and warmly and comfortably furnished. Wifi is available.
Guest access
Our guests will enjoy the entire upstairs floor of our house, with a small sitting deck at their private front entrance. The stairs to the second floor are original to the house, which was built in the 1840's, so they are a little steeper than usual. Ample parking is available.
Other things to note
Directly across the road you'll find a well-stocked general store -- some of the best sandwiches on the island -- a brew pub and barbeque restaurant.
Country roads that are great short-cuts to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park end right at our property. We're located in the township of Bar Harbor but not in the busy hub itself...Our location is on one of two main roads on the island. The good news is that we are centrally located for exploring all parts of MDI. The entrance to Acadia National Park is 5 miles away. Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Seal Harbor and the rest of Mount Desert Island are all easy to get to from our location. The downside is that the road is busy and there is traffic noise.

About the host
Your host

When I was in college I worked in Acadia National Park in the summers. After I graduated, I stayed and worked on the Island for a number of years before moving back to Atlanta. Of course, I always wanted to come back to Mt. Desert Island, but my career, my husband's business, our children, elderly parents -- all those very important things came first. When the opportunity to move popped up, my husband, Paul, and I jumped at the chance. We both grew up in large, Southern families. Guests from all over the neighborhood -- and all over the world -- were often at our dining tables. We multiplied that happy energy in our Atlanta home. When we decided to move to Maine, we knew we wanted to infuse our new place with a similar upbeat vibe. We also wanted to create a special place for people coming to experience the Maine Coast and Acadia National Park. So here we are, living our best life, enjoying old friends and making new ones, meeting amazing people and working hard everyday to provide an extraordinary guest experience for everyone who stays with us.
Why they chose this property
Our old, timber frame house was built in 1847. The barn was built sometime before 1850 and served as the Livery Stable for this end of Mt. Desert Island which was primarily a farming community for a couple of hundred years. Paul has spent his career designing and building homes, and he gets all the credit for saving the barn -- which was falling in -- re-designing it, and creating two beautiful apartments within. He also renovated our house and tucked a cozy Suite Under the Eaves for guests.
What makes this property unique
The hiking in Acadia National Park is some of the best in the U.S. It's fun. It's accessible and the views are spectacular. Paul has put together a great guide to his favorite hikes in Acadia, and he's marked a trail map as a companion to the guide. Our guests love it!
Additionally, the Carriage Roads in Acadia are fantastic for cycling. We have excellent Cannondale bikes to share, along with helmets and racks.
