About this property
NEW Johnny Cash "The Rambler" Suite
Looking for the perfect downtown spot? Check out this vintage-style apartment with modern amenities! Sit back and relax as you're transported to 1968 with a Johnny Cash vibe. Conveniently located off Main Street in Custer, it's just steps away from grocery stores and coffee shops - plus plenty of parking nearby on the parade route. Feel like home (and hear some classic tunes) at our place!
I give my guests space but am available when needed. As locals, we can answer any and all questions about the Black Hills - even our favorite places to eat!
Our downtown Custer apartment puts you right in the heart of great restaurants and coffee shops! Plus, it's just a few blocks away from one of South Dakota's most beloved trails - The Mickelson Trail. Just keep in mind that since this place is so conveniently located near all the hustle and bustle there may be some street noise - but we think it adds to its charm!
- Custer Pool is 0.5 miles (10 minute walk)
- Swimming in 7 lakes nearby
- 800 feet from the Mickelson
- 10 minutes from Crazy Horse
- 30 minutes from Mt. Rushmore
- 2 hours from the Badlands
- 1 hour from Deadwood
- 10 minutes from Custer State Park
Guests have access to the entire place.
Looking for the ideal downtown abode? Come check out this prime spot in Custer! You'll be surrounded by delicious restaurants, quaint shops, and loads of delectable options like ice cream and buffalo. Not enough caffeine to fuel your day? No worries - there's always a nearby coffee shop as well!
- QUEEN BED
- SOFA BED (PULL-OUT)
- 1 BATHROOM WITH SHOWER
Live the good life at the Custer Rambler! Our convenient location across from Lynns Dakota Mart and next door to Ace Hardware puts you right in the heart of all that Custer has to offer. Everything is within easy reach - just take a leisurely stroll down Main Street for some great dining, shopping and coffee spots. Plus, we've got insider tips on where our favorite restaurants are so planning your day out will be a breeze!
With its unique Johnny Cash theme, our newly renovated apartment is the ultimate place to take a step back in time! Ride bikes along beautiful Mickelson Trail for an adventure you won't forget - it's sure not something every living space can offer!

IS THIS RENTAL AVAILABLE YEAR-ROUND?
YES! Custer is high elevation. There are on average 228 sunny days per year here! The average summer temp is 80 degrees and winter can be in the 30’s-40’s. Many stores and restaurants stay open year-round! We have parades for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Burning Beetle in Custer. Custer has many fall/winter events. We are about 1 hour from skiing at Terry Peak.
WHAT RESTAURANTS ARE OPEN YEAR-ROUND?
The Custer Wolf, Custer Beacon, Skogen are a few of the restaurants that are open year-round.
DOES THE RAMBLER HAVE A KITCHEN?
The Custer Rambler is equipped with MOST kitchen supplies but not all. We have a refrigerator with a freezer, some pots and pans, cutting board, some knives but this is NOT a full-sized kitchen.
IS THERE A PLACE TO RENT BIKES AND UTVS?
YES! Black Hills Power Bikes is a great way to see the Mickelson Trail. For UTV/ATV rental we recommend Hill City Adventures. We also have 2 bikes to use during your stay (upon availability). Sign-up for this amenity through the link in your email (Charge Automation). We provide helmets with the bikes for the safety of our guests.
HOW MANY HIKING/BIKING TRAILS ARE THERE?
We have over 70 miles of hiking in and around the park. Other than the Mickelson Trail (500 feet from the house) we put our favorite hikes (including Black Elk Peak) in the guidebook.
DOES THE RAMBLER HAVE A POOL?
The Custer Rambler is an apartment connected to a larger property we own and manage. While it does not have a pool on the property, we have a community pool down the street that we give guests passes too. Make sure you ask when you come and we will make sure you get those passes!
ARE THERE STORES NEARBY TO BUY FOOD?
We have Lynn’s Grocery across the street and and Dollar General nearby.
Check out our other properties in Custer and Hill City! Look up “Black Hills Family Vacations” in both towns.

About the host
Hosted by Sarah Walker

We traded our Colorado mountain views for the beauty of South Dakota and Michigan. Now, we’re discovering everything that makes the Black Hills such a special place to call home!
Why they chose this property
Ethan's connection to the Black Hills runs deep; not only was he born and raised here, but we also manage several properties in this area! Though our reach extends beyond Custer - with additional locations nestled away in Colorado and North Carolina – nothing beats his hometown appeal.
What makes this property unique
If you're looking for convenience during your stay, our unique property on Main Street is the perfect fit! Explore all that Custer State Park has to offer - just steps away from delicious restaurants and ice cream shops. Enjoy morning coffee by one of the many beautiful lakes or take a short stroll over to local stores. Convenience meets relaxation here in this lively area near everything!
