Butterfly Cottage Martinborough

Less than a ten minute (600m) walk to the Square, Butterfly Cottage is a picture-book late 1800s small house.

The cottage is steeped in the history of Martinborough. It was once a hairdresser’s shop, then a residence, located on the edge of The Square. It was relocated to Malcolm Street in the early 20th century, when it became a family home for many decades.

It’s a cosy, peaceful little two bedroom cottage on a quiet street. The perfect place to come home to after a day exploring everything Martinborough and the Wairarapa region has to offer.

The cottage is a charming old, mostly unchanged home from early Martinborough.

Parking is right in front of the cottage on the gravel area. There is room for two small or one large vehicle.

The cottage is kept cosy and comfortable by a heat pump/air conditioner in the lounge. Entertainment available with wifi, Bluetooth speaker/radio, Netflix, Prime, Freeview and Chromecast. There is a comfy, large two seater leather couch and two fabric armchairs. There are plenty of books to read and a few board games in the hutch.

There’s a small kitchen with everything you need, including a Nespresso machine, fridge freezer, stove and fold out dining table for the compact dining area.

The main bedroom has a superbly comfortable, firm, super-king bed and French doors which open out onto a deck - perfect for breakfast or for a relaxing glass of famous Martinborough pinot noir. The second bedroom has a firm queen sized bed and an original decorative fireplace.

The bathroom has a roll top bath with shower over bath.

No laundry facilities are available at the cottage but there is a laundromat at the local BP service station.

***The cottage is very, very old and not overly modernised. The floors slope slightly and some of the floorboards are creaky and can be a little uneven. We think it’s all part of Butterfly Cottage’s charm but if you’re a little unsteady in your feet, this wee cottage might not be the best fit for you.

Lovely cosy cottage with everything you need. Felt very well thought out with every detail like coffee and even little chocolates. Especially liked the lounge area. Quiet and close to town. Note: no handles to get in and of bath/shower which can be tricky if you have mobility issues. Host was kind and quick to respond. Would definitely return.

Cute cottage for girls weekend getaway

Loved the cute cottage vibes. Beds were very comfortable and big. House was cosy and perfect for an overnight girls getaway place to relax after biking wine tour during the day. Shower was great too. Easy and high tech lock for security was great. Easy walk to the centre of Martinborough, Four Square supermarket and fish n chips shop all very convenient. Communication with host was fab and instructions were spot on 👌 Would highly recommend.

The house is sitting next to a right of way for rear property. Nice decor, except window in the bathroom isn't very private. Very small dining area. Okay for 2, squeeze for 3+. Used all heaters and heat pump.

The host, Belinda, made our stay at the Butterfly Cottage in Martinborough absolutely perfect for Christmas. Not only was the cottage comfortable and spacious, but had placed Christmas decor around the cottage, such as a “Merry Christmas” doormat, a wreath on the door, and a few other tasteful decorations about. Belinda even left a Ferrero Rocher pyramid which was such a nice touch.Communication was easy and uncomplicated, and the host had even offered an early check in time than what was advertised. The cottage was clean and had all the amenities we needed.We will definitely be staying here again in the near future, I would highly recommend if you’re looking for a quiet and comfortable stay in Martinborough.

Quiet and nice but not much love

The location was quiet with a ten minute walk into town. The bed linen was lovely, the pot of chocolates, soap all good. The stay was OK but really the property was quite basic in certain areas. The dining table was in an alcove where my husband's head touched the roof. Certainly not a spot for more than two people. The garden had been maintained at the front but nothing more than that. The back was sparse and uninviting. Putting a shower over a bath with high sloping sides, designed before showers were invented, crosses the line between quaint and rustic into plain old uncomfortable. The two shower curtains stick to your body as you try to wash and don't cover the wall behind the taps. This wall (which is behind the bed in the main bedroom) and the floor is looking predictably damp. All up it's OK for two people for a weekend, but needs a bit more TLC.

Great option for a long weekend

This is a beautiful restored wee cottage, for one or two couples, which is within easy walking distance of the square. We had troubles with getting in to start with, due to the heat playing havoc with the lock mechanism, but Belinda was really helpful in helping us get around that. This was the second time we stayed here, and won't be the last. We enjoy the tranquility, and the back yard is great for sitting out in the sun.

Hi, the cottage was clean and comfortable. Everything we needed was supplied. Beds were super comfortable. Only slight problem was very squeaky floorboards in the hallway which would wake anyone trying to sleep. Great check in check out. Lovely quiet neighbourhood.

A gem called Martinborough

A lovely and well appointed cottage with all the little things thought of, however, older people may have difficulty accessing a shower which is over a rather narrow bath and no grab handle.

Why they chose this property

There’s always something going on in Martinborough, from the Fair in February and March, through to Toast Martinborough in January and all sorts of festivals and events in between. Vineyards, cafes, shops and walks. The climate is wonderful. There’s nothing like a hot summer day in Marty and the winters are beautiful and bracing. It’s a great base to see the amazing landscapes of the Wairarapa region and visit the other towns.

What makes this property unique

This little house is a slice of history. It’s been here longer than most other houses in the town. It was originally by the Square and was relocated to its current position many decades ago. We’re finding out more about it every chance we can. Just imagine the people and events it has seen come and go in the last 120+ years
