Drive along unfenced roads surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the northern lakes, until you arrive at these cosy character holiday cottages, on a working sheep and beef farm 2½ miles from Caldbeck. Renovated from an old barn, Swaledale Cottage (ref W1780) is the middle cottage, Ellerbeck Cottage (ref W1821) is the end cottage, they are nicely decorated and furnished and feature exposed beams, with views over farmland to the fells beyond and walking right from the door. Children can explore the workings of a real farm, they can sit on a tractor and feed the lambs (accompanied by the owner). In John Peel country, Caldbeck is a pretty and peaceful village which has, in addition to cafés, craft and antique shops, a goldsmith, clogmaker and bowling green. Situated on the edge of the National Park, it is known locally as ’Back o’ Skiddaw’, a walk over which will bring you into the bustling market town of Keswick. Keswick with its lakes, Bassenthwaite and Derwent Water are a 15-minute drive and full of interesting things to see and do. Enjoy a ride up Derwent Water on the Keswick Launch, use the many walking and cycle paths to explore the breathtaking scenery, experience the theatre by the lake and the numerous museums suitable for all the family.
