About this property

Kingfisher, The Isle of Wight.

Kingfisher is one of three lodges available to holiday let. Each lodge can sleep up to six people across three bedrooms, providing plenty of space for families and small groups. The wooden exterior has weathered to a beautiful silvery grey, ensuring the lodge sits comfortably against the woodland backdrop. You enter the property via a decked porch; an ideal place for a quiet morning coffee before the rest of the household are up. The ground floor is predominantly an open-plan living space, with doors opening on to a large wooden balcony. The view of the trees can be enjoyed through the doors from inside but by stepping over the threshold, to embrace the wonders of nature, you can also enjoy al fresco dinning on the balcony! The kitchen is equipped for self-catering and being open plan makes it quick and easy to transfer food to hungry guests, be that inside or out. After a day of holiday activities, guests can stretch out on the large corner sofa to relax and watch a favourite film on the wall mounted TV; lighting the wood burner in the cooler months. Climbing the stairs from the hallway will take you to the bedrooms, which are light and airy, lifted by a pop of colour and countryside views from the windows. The ground floor has a bathroom with a shower over the bath, whilst upstairs the guests have access to a shower room.

The Water Mill itself has existed for over a thousand years and is first mentioned in the doomsday book A.D 1086. Still a working mill, it has supplied flour and animal feeds to the people of the island for many years. Flour, muesli and oats are still produced today and can be purchased on site.
Having always been a popular tourist attraction, The Mill is set in 35 acres of rural landscape where you’ll find proud looking peacocks strutting freely around the grounds, often with a few doves or ducks in tow. As a guest staying at any one of the holiday properties on site you will have free access to the various attractions when open, which are just a stone’s throw away from your accommodation. (Please check the opening times to avoid disappointment when booking.)

After exploring the Mill, why not relax and indulge in a cream tea or ice cream at the onsite café, which is a converted 17th century cattle barn - you can still see the marks where the cows rubbed against the pillars! A round of the 18-hole adventure golf course or a peep inside the small war museum can be entertaining for all ages. When the attractions are closed the owners are very happy for guests to wander within the extensive grounds. A stroll up towards the barns, home to a large portable steam engine and other old farming equipment, followed by a visit to the small windmill on the hill and back along the river, makes for an enjoyable walk. Not surprisingly there’s an abundance of wildlife in the area – in particular, keep a look out for the shy red squirrels, which the island is famous for or the wide variety of birds. If you’re looking for a peaceful, rural setting from which to explore the island, then look no further!

LOCATION:

The picturesque village of Calbourne takes its name from the stream that passes through the village - the Caul Bourne. Arguably one of the prettiest west Wight villages, it is not surprising that much of Calbourne is a designated conservation area. The chocolate-box houses that flank Winkle Street (aka Barrington Row) date from the 18th-century and overlook the village namesake. There are numerous local footpaths and bridleways, stretching out over miles of Downland and countryside. Freshwater Bay, famous for crystal clear water and striking coastal views from the cliff tops, along with the iconic Needles are to the West. Renowned for having a warm, sunny climate the island has 57 miles of coastline containing some of the best beaches in the UK. Sandown, Shanklin and Ryde offer miles of golden sandy beaches, whilst Freshwater, Totland, Colwell and Steephill Cove are attractive Bays, great for swimming and sailing.

There are a variety of attractions across the island which can be enjoyed throughout the year - explore the quaint villages, indulge in cream teas and local produce, discover the inventive ways to use garlic at The Garlic Farm and restaurant, take the plunge at the Tapnell Farm Aqua Park, explore the rides and grounds at Robin Hill Adventure Park, broaden your knowledge at the museums and historic sites – or fall in love with the adorable animals at one of the dedicated animal centres, like the Donkey or Wildheart Animal Sanctuaries. Alternatively step into the world of Queen Victoria by visiting her Italian inspired holiday home Osborne House, designed by her beloved husband Prince Albert or enjoy the unique charm to be found at Quarr Abbey. Discover the magical Shanklin Chine or Ventnor Botanical Gardens. Or perhaps a day simply fishing or surfing is more like it? Finally, don’t forget that there is often an event or festival to factor into your holiday agenda, such as the famous Isle of Wight Festival, Cowes Week, the Walking Festival or the Classic Car Extravaganza..

We as a family stayed in Kingfisher, the location was ideal for us to get anywhere. It was quiet, set on a site by the watermill. We visited the mill and museum. The lodge had every facility and was extremely clean. The welcome tray was a lovely idea. We will be revisiting in the springsummer.

A family and dog friendly business and a great base for West WIght
We had a great holiday. A very clean lodge which provided all we needed. The layout is very good with an open plan kitchen/diner and separate dining room. The front porch is sheltered and useful, and the rear verandah/terrace overlooking the woods is a real asset as a great place to sit and relax and watch the wildlife. Having access to the Water Mill's facilities was very useful and we enjoyed using them. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and made sure we had a good holiday. The location is good for exploring the many activities and walks in West Wight which is one of our favourite places for a holiday. We had two children and a dog with us and we all had a good time!

A gorgeous setting
We stayed for two weeks in Kingfisher and really enjoyed our time there. We loved our visits to the water mill; joining in with weekend activities, playing mini golf, visiting the museum and drinking coffee in the beautiful cafe. We also bought some of the mill’s cherry oats; they were delicious. Nearby, we could walk our dogs in the idyllic woodland and explore the miles of countryside surrounding the lodge. The lodge itself was well equipped, nicely presented and comfortable. We loved that there was an eco-friendly vibe there even though there were a few occasions when we were without hot water. The owner was very helpful and we eventually managed the situation ourselves. Wendy was amazing. She was so friendly and helped us on a daily basis - sight seeing, local advice and island information. Calbourne is a great base for visiting all parts of the island. We particularly enjoyed Alum Bay (the chair lift and boat trips) and the Amazon Zoo. The car boot opposite the Sun Inn is also worth a visit on a Friday evening. The best pubs we visited were The Horse and Groom and The Blacksmith’s Arms. We also had a lovely walk round Cowes and would highly recommend The Fountain pub; so welcoming and fantastic for dogs. Shanklin was also a great place to visit with its gorgeous arty shops; it even had an all year round Christmas shop. We were a little disappointed with the beaches as online it said the beach was dog friendly but when we got there, there were seasonal restrictions. So it was a bit of a walk for my elderly mum. Overall, we loved our stay in Calbourne and would recommend it as a base for those who enjoy nature, walking and exploring.
