Beautiful and spacious three-bedroom cottage - impeccably maintained and tastefully decorated. Knotty pine walls and ceiling throughout. Large stone natural gas fireplace centers an open concept living area with a vaulted ceiling and split-log staircase leading to a loft with extra beds. Tranquil riverfront views of the popular Au Train River. Well stocked cottage with plenty of extras. We want you to feel right at home so that you can relax and enjoy your vacation! We added new steps down to the river, so you can bring your canoes or kayaks right down! We have lived in the Upper Peninsula off and on for close to 30 years and are excited to share the best of what makes this area an amazing four seasons vacation destination.
ABOUT THE AREA: Au Train is located in Alger County, one of the most scenic areas in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This increasingly popular vacation destination has adventure awaiting in many directions. In nearby Munising visit the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, beautiful waterfalls, Grand Island National Recreation Area, and the Hiawatha National Forest. The hiking, biking, snowshoeing and snowmobiling opportunities are endless. Au Train Lake and Lake Superior have beautiful sandy beaches. Au Train Lake is famous for great fishing and great waterskiing. The Au Train River is one of the safest and most scenic and enjoyable streams in the state for canoes and kayaks. This is the perfect place to get away from it all. Fall Fishing is great in both the many inland lakes of the area and in Lake Superior. Deer and Bear as well as Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock hunting are excellent. In the winter, enjoy miles of groomed snowmobile trails, ice fishing on Au Train Lake and Lake Superior, or perhaps enjoy snowshoeing or cross country skiing through vast wooded areas. In the spring, Woodlands are carpeted with wildflowers and mushrooms peak through the ground. Trout fishing is excellent in the river and numerous streams as well as Lake Superior.
TYPES OF RENTERS WE CATER TO: We love renting to families or groups of friends who love nature and who enjoy experiencing the best of what the outdoors has to offer. We don't rent to groups under 25 years of age. We respect our wonderful neighbors and their right to enjoy their own privacy and expect our renters to comply with Au Train's noise ordinances posted in the cottage (quiet hours 11pm to 7am). If you are looking for a place to hold loud parties, this is not your place. But if you are looking for an amazing cottage with tons of charm to have a fantastic and memorable vacation, look no further!

2 night stay 5 friendsAwesome well stocked beautiful cottageGreat communication with ownersCould not have liked it moreVery comfortable escape from bad weather
The cabin was great. The blizzard knocked the power out for the area. We had the gas fireplace that heated the whole house comfortably. The adults and kids played games and did puzzles that were there. The kitchen was well stocked. The washer and dryer were very handy. There were plenty of towels and sitting for our group of seven. We enjoyed our Skiing and snow. The owners checked in with us which was nice touch.
This was a fantastic stay for a family wedding in Marquette @ Carp River Gardens! The property was even more beautiful than the pictures, sparkling clean, and had everything we needed for a relaxing trip. The location was perfect, and the host was incredibly responsive to our questions. We'd highly recommend this place and would love to return
We really enjoyed the cottage, had everything we could have possibly needed, very well stocked. Loved the area of Au Train, close to so many beautiful areas. Gorgeous river right in your backyard. Would definitely stay again

To those considering staying at our cottage - we have been getting great reviews from our snowmobile renters, and are getting repeat business in our second year of owning our cottage. We have a garage, a parking area and a long driveway to accommodate multiple vehicles/trailers!
Great location for exploring the Marquette area. The cabin is spacious and comfortable. The kids loved the loft area. The spot by the river is beautiful. We liked it so much that we are hoping to come up this winter to explore some of the cross country ski trails in the area.

A great location, cozy backyard, and the kitchen was nicely equipped. It is worth noting that grown adults cant stand up straight in the loft portion, but perfect for elementary or middle school ages kids. Nobody goes on vacation to hang out in your bedroom anyway. We had a wonderful stay!
We were there to enjoy the winter sites and snowmobile. Great location, close to Picture Rocks and the snowmobile trail just a mile or so away. Mike and Colleen are great hosts. Respond quickly to any questions.
The house was exactly as described in the overview. It had EVERYTHING you could need on a vacation. The location was near perfect, close to the beach, kayaking, a small store, and close to Munising and Marquette. We have stayed in many places and this was by far the cleanest and well maintained. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone thinking about staying in this area.

About the host
Hosted by Mike and Colleen
Mike's parents were born and raised in Ishpeming. Colleen's family moved to Chatham in the UP in 1973. We met in 1985 at a Marquette accounting firm where we both worked. We married in 1988, had two kids and relocated to Cleveland, Ohio in 2000 for Mike's job at Cleveland Cliffs. We recently retired to the East Lansing area. We loved our many years living in the UP and are glad that we now live closer to family and friends!
Why they chose this property
When we lived in the UP we loved to rent places either on Au Train lake or on the Au Train river. We hadn't thought about buying a place there until we heard about this property from a family friend in early 2018. When we saw pictures of it we fell in love with it - the sturdy construction, the knotty pine walls and ceiling, the stone fireplace, and especially the great location on the river. We were fortunate to have purchased the cottage from the original owner Nancy who took such excellent care of the place.
