We’ve named the first pourewa ‘Ahi Kā’ (people of the land keeping the fires burning) because the deeper purpose of Parangarehu lies in reconnecting the next generation with their whenua (land) by working on it through either conservation, tourism, and hospitality so, it’s not just a business it`s a legacy project for our whānau.”
Parangarehu is a special place, and we’ve always felt deeply connected to its mōuri (lifeforce). We’re excited for others to experience it too.”
Ahi Kā has been co-designed to bring you our manaakitanga and aroha for your noho (stay) with us.
We believe that your time out from the hustle and bustle of life is a priority for us at Parangarehu Ahi Kā.
You choose how you want to relax, with a walk to the beach, on our farm, a visit to the lighthouse, or stay inside and enjoy the sights looking out across Te Raukawakawa (Cook Strait).
We will send you guest access instructions 48 hours before your stay giving you access across a bridge and entry into Ahi Kā.
You are free to use any part of our rural property. It is a working farm so you will need to use judgement.
We are neighbours to the Regional East Harbour Park and there are many sites to visit.
We prefer hands off and light touch manaakitanga (hospitality).
Please note that beach access is nearby and within a country walk. The use of two e-bikes is part of the stay and essential to access nearby locations. However, it is within walking distance. Feel free to contact us if we can assist you with your travel arrangements to stay with us.

About the host
Hosted by Malesha Hunter
We are a whanau (family) owned accommodation business and are offering a unique stay that few people get the opportunity to experience. We recently made this offer after our whenua (property) had been locked away for several decades. We enjoy sharing this unique experience with our manuhiri (guests).
Why they chose this property
Parangarehu is whenua Maori (Maori land) and we have been the kaitiaki (custodians) for hundreds of years. We are here to care for our whenua and pass on to the next generation.
What makes this property unique
Parangarehu is the original name of this large landscape and area. Parangarehu is a rural and coastal location to the East of Te Whanganui a Tara (Wellington, NZ) overlooking Te moana o Raukawakawa (Cook Strait).
As part of your stay we provide two e-bikes to ride to close locations and enjoy the native bush and the coastline to yourselves.
It is normal to see dolphins, native birds, lizards and geckos, sea life and the odd whale. This is a location that sits high above the coastline with a direct view to Te Waka a Maui (South Island) in the far distance.
Nau mai, haere mai e rarau, welcome, come and enjoy a special relaxing experience.
