About this property
The Barn House Lodge
A unique lodging experience. A barn turned home. The barn was built in the year 1900. We are located in downtown Spillville, IA. A unique Czechoslovakian town. This barn is part of once was a working farm before the town of Spillville was incorporated in 1920. This barn was once a home to cows, horses and I am sure some chickens. We have the resident "barn cat" Stormy patrolling the property. The living room and master bedroom is in what was once the hay loft. The kitchen is where they parked the tractor at night. The large private back yard was once a corn field. The Turkey River is just a short distance from the private back patio. Bring your kayaks or canoe and drop in right here. You may see deer helping themselves to the neighbors apple trees.
Spillville is a village founded by a German. This town grew into a refuge for Czechs. This small Czech village became a retreat for composer Antonin Dvorak.
Today Spillville is a small town in the northeast corner of Iowa nestled among the soft rolling hills of the Turkey River Valley. A dedicated community of families strive to preserve the rich history, heritage and Czech culture.

We bought
the property in 1987. We live in the main house. Both of our boys have started their adult married life living in the Barn. Our 2 grandsons have lived in the barn. We have enjoyed over the years making this Barn a home.
In the fall of 2017 we decided to do a complete remodel of the barn. All of the work was done by Kevin and our 2 sons. It took us a year do to remodel
The living room is located on the second floor which is what was once the hay loft. The ceiling is finished in knotty pine, and the floors are finished ash hardwood floors. The ceiling lights are authentic hay rack wheels that we salvaged from a barn that was being torn down. The queen bedroom has a beautiful view of the back yard and the turkey river. The second bedroom has a full size bed. The 3rd bedroom is on the main floor and has 2 twin beds.
The complete barn is trimmed out in Barn boards that were salvaged from the inside of the barn during the first remodel in 1999. The kitchen which was once where the tractor and wagon was stored is finished with oak cabinets and has a door to a deck for you sit and relax with a cup of coffee in the morning and watch the sun rise, or have a cold one in the evening listening to the sounds of the night. You have the feel of country living but in downtown Spillville. The resident chickens will great you also when walking around the property.
You can enjoy bonfires, star gazing and connect with nature from the hustle and bustle of life. You forget that you are in town. You have a private deck, patio to use.
The Barn House Lodge sits on the back side of our property. Our 1890 Victorian House sits along the main street and the Barn built in 1900 sits behind our house. In 1900 this property was an actual working farm. The barn was then home to horses, cows and I am sure all of the regular barn animals. The only farm animals around today are the resident chickens and the resident property protecter, "Stormy" the outside cat.
