About this property

Historic 3+BR Norfolk CT Victorian, Woodstove, Screened in Porch, Walk to town

A Victorian home at the end of a dead-end road in Norfolk, in the northwest corner of Connecticut — three bedrooms plus an office, sleeping eight, a half-mile walk from the village. Newly renovated with everything a modern stay needs, but the original bones are intact: wide hardwood floors, antique clocks and artwork, and a stained-glass window on the stair landing that catches the afternoon light.

SLEEPS 8
One king bedroom, one queen bedroom, a third bedroom with two twin beds and an office with full-size futon — all upstairs, reached by a traditional staircase. There is also a full-size air mattress available if you need it. Two full baths.

THE KITCHEN
Fully equipped for a group cooking real meals: induction cooktop, wall oven, and a separate convection oven that also air-fries and toasts. Blender, Instant Pot, slow cooker, dishwasher, and three ways to make coffee — drip, Keurig, and French press. The dining table expands, so everyone eats together.

THREE PLACES TO SIT OUTSIDE
A front porch with a bench and two rocking chairs. A screened back porch with a couch, two chairs and a table for four, looking out over a private field edged with weeping willows. And an open back deck with a table seating eight to ten — the whole group can eat outside. Most days you'll watch turkey and deer cross the field; black bear pass through regularly too.

WHEN YOU STAY IN
A deep shelf of board games and jigsaw puzzles — Ticket to Ride, Codenames, Telestrations, Battleship, Pictionary, Boggle — plus a vintage dollhouse for younger guests, a TV and gaming console, and lawn games outside: croquet, badminton, cornhole. A bay window with two chairs, looking out at the lawn.

EVERY SEASON
Mini-split A/Cs for summer. Hot-water radiators throughout, a wood-burning fireplace insert in the living area, and a wood-burning fire pit table outside for cold nights. In snow season the driveway is plowed and the walk and patio shoveled before you arrive.

WORKING FROM HERE
Reliable wifi and two desk setups — one in the office, one in the second bedroom.

THE VILLAGE — A HALF-MILE WALK
Cafés and shops in the center of Historic Norfolk, plus the Norfolk Historical Society and the town library. Live music year-round at Infinity Music Hall, and each summer the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival brings Yale School of Music performances to the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Estate. Free tennis, pickleball and a playground at Botelle School on Route 44, five minutes by car.

OUTDOORS, YEAR-ROUND
Hiking in every direction: Haystack Mountain and its stone tower, Dennis Hill, Campbell Falls, and the trails through Great Mountain Forest. Lake swimming, river fishing and disc golf all nearby. Norfolk is the Icebox of Connecticut and leans into it — learn-to-curl sessions at the Norfolk Curling Club, skiing at Mohawk Mountain.

GOOD TO KNOW
Parking for three cars in the driveway, with more on the street. Keyless entry by code. Washer and dryer in the basement. Pets welcome. This is a rural community at the end of a dead-end road, and Norfolk earns its Icebox nickname — pack accordingly in winter. Firewood is usually on hand but we can't promise it every stay; message us before you travel and we'll let you know. Please keep food indoors and trash secured — we're in bear country.

I’d definitely stay here again, except the price was a lot for just one family. It was comfortable, quiet, the bathrooms were nice and well stocked (I liked that they had cetaphil face wash). The kitchen is also well stocked if you wanted to cook - many air bnb’s are missing crucial utensils and such but this place was like someone’s real house and had everything you would need.

We loved the old Victorian home on a dead end street. So quiet and woodsy! We also wanted a dog friendly property and this was perfect. The kitchen facilities are fabulous! Very quiet area. The house featured many antiques and paintings which we all enjoyed. We had 9 people for Christmas dinner and the dining table expanded to fit all of us. The hosts were gratuitous and available for any questions. Wonderful time

Lovely house and nice area to stay!

We stayed here to see some local family and it was a wonderful spot. House is perfect for family gathering and the kids and dogs enjoyed the large yard. The house is equipped with everything you could need. Downtown Norfolk is beautiful and the Berkshire Country Store had the best breakfast after our hike at Campbell’s Falls. We will be back again!

My girlfriends and I were going to a show at Infinity Theater, and we live 2 hours away. I was so happy to find this gem that is a brief walking distance from the venue. We loved spending time out on the deck or out on the screen porch listening to nature. The home was very clean! The kitchen is set up with everything you need to make a tiny snack or a family feast. There are hiking trails nearby. We walked downtown to pick up breakfast, and it was so nice sitting outside. I highly recommend staying at this property. My girlfriends and I are excited to come back during other seasons and see what the area has to offer.

Grateful

I couldn’t believe this house popped up when I was trying to find a place to stay ’near Norfolk’! We have family in town and there is never enough space for us all to stay overnight… This house is amazing and has everything you need for a home away from home. There are brand new kitchen appliances, including a magical stove that boils water in seconds! The hosts are very friendly, attentive to question and genuinely hope you have a wonderful time. I have already requested to stay for a week next year and the entire family is psyched!

About the host

Hosted by Denise Koeppel

Host profile image

We, the owners, are Kathryn and Bill — both born and bred in Brooklyn, NY. Norfolk is our other home base, and after years of coming up here we know it well enough to point you at the good stuff.

Bill is a carpenter with strong opinions about what's worth saving in a nineteenth-century house, which is why the floors, the stair-landing window and the original details are all still here while the kitchen and baths are entirely modern. The antique clocks throughout are his.

I'm a lawyer and a social worker. I'm also the puzzler and the game player in the family, so the shelf of jigsaws and board games is mine — Ticket to Ride, Codenames, Telestrations and a stack of thousand-piece puzzles that have defeated better people than me. If you finish one, take a picture and share with us. We love to know that other people are enjoying our amenities.

Our son is in college now, which is part of why the house is set up the way it is. We spent years coming up here as a family, and the twin room, the dollhouse and the lawn games are all left over from that. They get more use from guests than they used to from us.

Marvell is our eight-year-old mixed breed pup, and the reason dogs are welcome here. Her view is that the lawn exists for chasing balls and frisbees, and most visiting dogs come around to that position within an hour.

We're active hosts, but we're not always in Norfolk — Denise is. She's our local cohost, lives nearby and knows the house and the town inside out, so if something comes up she can be there quickly. Between the three of us, someone always answers.

We host because we like this town and we like the kind of people who choose it — the ones who want a quiet field, a walk into the village and a fire at the end of the day rather than a resort. We're reachable if you need us and out of the way if you don't.

Why they chose this property

Kathryn, one of the owners, summered nearby in Goshen. Every year at the end of August her family would drive to Norfolk for the library book sale. For a long time that was her whole relationship with this town — one Saturday a summer, carrying boxes of books back to the car.

Then Bill, Kathryn's husband, came along. He's a history and architecture buff, and Norfolk rewards that: a village center that has kept its shape, buildings worth stopping in front of, a library far grander than a town this size has any business having. He fell for the place that afternoon. We started looking not long after.

His love of clocks and art came with us. You'll find evidence of these passions in every room throughout the house,

The house itself sits at the end of a dead-end road — no through traffic, just the field out back, the willows along its edge, and whatever wanders across it. Turkey many mornings, deer at dusk, and bear often enough that we keep the trash secured. Sitting on the screened porch watching that field is still the best thing about the place.

What we didn't expect was how much there is to do. You can walk into the village in ten minutes for coffee, shops and galleries. Infinity Music Hall books touring acts year-round, and each summer the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival fills the Stoeckel Estate with Yale School of Music performances. Haystack Mountain, Dennis Hill, Campbell Falls and Great Mountain Forest are all minutes away, with lakes to swim and rivers to fish.

Winter makes its own case. Norfolk is the Icebox of Connecticut and doesn't apologize for it — learn-to-curl nights at the curling club, skiing at Mohawk Mountain, and a fire waiting when you get back.

The library book sale is still the last weekend of August. If you can plan around it, do.

What makes this property unique

Most houses out here make you choose between privacy and walkability. This one doesn't. We're at the end of a dead-end road with a field and woods out back and no through traffic — and the village center is a ten-minute walk. You can spend the morning without seeing another person and still get coffee on foot in the afternoon.

The second thing is that eight people can actually eat together here. The dining table expands to seat ten, and the back deck table seats eight to ten more. Plenty of houses sleep eight; far fewer can put all eight around one table, indoors when it's raining and outdoors when it isn't. If you're traveling as two families or three generations, that turns out to matter more than the bedroom count.

There are three separate places to sit outside, and they're genuinely different rooms. The front porch, with a bench and two rockers, is for watching the road and the weather. The screened back porch — couch, two chairs, a table for four — is where people end up after dinner, bug-free. The open deck is for sun, grilling and the big table. A group naturally spreads out across all three.

It's a real four-season house, which is rarer than it sounds. Mini-split air conditioning in every room handles August. Hot-water radiators, a wood-burning fireplace insert and a fire pit table handle February, and the driveway is plowed and the walk shoveled before you arrive. Nothing about this place is closed for the winter.

And it's a house with a personality rather than a rental with a color scheme. The Victorian bones are intact — hard wood floors, a stained-glass window on the stair landing — and the clocks throughout are my husband's collection, not staging. Guests notice them. They also notice the dollhouse, the shelf of board games and puzzles, and the twin room, which is why families and couples both keep coming back.
