About this property
Rustic Lake Michigan Cottage With Private Beach
RENTALS FOR NEXT YEAR BEGIN IN LATE SEPTEMBER, PREVIOUS GUESTS GIVEN PREFERENCE.
THERE IS NO CENTRAL HEATING, MERELY FIREPLACES AND SPACE HEATERS. MAXIMUM OF 8 GUESTS. NO PETS.
This rustic, shingle-sided cottage is one of the last of its kind in Leland. The beach is literally out the back door and Lake Michigan is a constant presence. Nearly all the rooms, including both the dining room and the deck where we take our meals, overlook it. No matter the weather, you'll hear the waves and sometimes the wind in the surrounding pines. With five bedrooms — three in the main house and two in "the annex" just across the deck from the main house — as many as 8 adults can sleep comfortably. There are two-and-a-half baths, with a clawfoot tub in the main house and a shower in the annex. There are canoes, kayaks, a paddleboard and bicycles for your use and we provide linen and towels, so there’s no need to bring those.

Another wonderfully relaxing week at PIneacres. A traditional summer cottage, maintained as it was 75 years ago. Great location, excellent views of the lake, beautiful walks on the Indiana Woods Road. We like to go back every year!
Another beautiful, relaxing week at Pineacres!! Such a great spot—close to town and right on the beach! The sunsets are to die for and we love the old fashioned charm! Thanks again sharing your piece of Heaven!
We love everything about Pineacres and can’t wait to hopefully return next year. Thank you Mandy and family for sharing this peace of paradise with us.
For a Lake Michigan beach property, there is much to enjoy: lake view, private beach, rustic character, sleeps a dozen if needed, wonderful wooded location, lots of quiet, wonderful deck with lake views, easy beach walk to Fishtown, excellent bikes for bikers. We happened to have some chilly and damp weather which impacted our enjoyment of the property. Great place to unplug in the warmer weather.
Another wonderful week at a cottage on Lake Michigan with deep family connections. We look forward every year to this chance to unwind and recenter ourselves. The cottage is a perfect snapshot of life 50+ years ago. Great location and easy access to the beach.
We keep coming back to Pineacres: the coziest cottage, the most beautiful beach, the best location, the greatest place to be with family and friends. No TV, no internet. Just conversation, sun and sand, fresh fish from Carlson's in Leland, views of the Manitous and Pyramid Point, and above all: a week with Lake Michigan in all her many moods. The very best.
We hade another great week, with beautiful balmy weather. Time on the beach, walking into town, the pleasant post-Labor Day time with fewer people in Leland. The cottage is always a great touchstone to return to--authentically summer cottage, the Leland of my childhood.
Our family had a wonderful time amidst the precious family heirlooms and pines at the rustic Pineacres cottage. We thoroughly enjoyed canoeing and kayaking mighty Lake MI while searching for Petoskey stones and Leland Blues. A treasure for sure!!
The perfect place to spend time with friends and family. Kayaking, swimming, collecting even more rocks, walking to Leland for ice cream, savoring lake trout from Carlson's, playing games, reading a book from the cottage collection, and just sitting on the beach anticipating another beautiful sunset, framed by the Manitous and Pyramid Point. Every year we remember how very lucky we are to be there.
The view from the beach at Pineacres is magical: Lake Michigan in all its moods, Pyramid Point and Sleeping Bear Dunes to the south, North and South Manitou directly west, and the village of Leland to the north. I carry it with me all year long.
We had a wonderful week at Pineacres--it's a perfect spot right on the beach, up high on a sand dune with gorgeous views from every room! We had dinners on the deck every night, capped off with sunsets on the beach. We loved using the bikes, kayaks and canoe! Our 6 year old granddaughter said it best when I was drying off our black lab (for the 15th time that day), I said, "She loves this place" and our granddaughter said, "So do I!"

Fantastic location and responsive host. This property needs a good clean out as it has many years of owners personal items. Paring down the broken or worn out kitchen and linen items would improve the experience! Lastly the electrical seems a bit dodgy with MANY extension cords even in the bathrooms. We loved the location but house needs some attention.
Although we didn't luck out with June weather, we did luck out with this magical cabin on the lake. The views of the lake are incredible, and the beach access is so special (the beach is huge this year!). The cabin itself is rustic and cozy, and you can tell immediately upon walking in how well-loved and what a special place it is. We stayed cozy and warm using the wonderful fireplace, and our kids absolutely loved reading the children's books around the cabin. We hope to return to enjoy more beach time and more deck dinners during better weather. Thank you for sharing your wonderful get-away with our family!
We embraced the quiet that came with no internet or television; and as a result rediscovered the simple pleasures of reading, listening to music or just "being".
It was everything, and so much more, than we had hoped.
Pineacres is a gem, and we are so grateful to Mandy for saying "yes" and retaining all of it's original charm and beauty.
Every year, my friends and family vacation together in northern Michigan and this year was our first stay at Mandy's cottage. Leland and the surrounding area are very charming and beautiful. The cottage is uniquely historical, full of lovely antiques and interesting creative art items all about. Creative people have lived here in the past and you can see there have been many good family times had. The location is quite private as it is tucked hidden in the woods yet it still a short walk to downtown Leland, which provides a convenient mixture of experiences. I think my favorite part of staying here was falling asleep to the sound of Lake Michigan waves and tree breezes! So special and totally relaxing.

About the host
Hosted by Mandy Bankson
The cottage has been in our family for four generations. A pair of great-grandparents rode here on horseback from Indiana to celebrate their honeymoon.
Why they chose this property
It's as if Pineacres has been preserved in amber. It is a rustic gem that conjures up a time when things at least seemed simpler than they are today. If your childhood included summers at a treasured lakeside cottage where the days were long and the nights were gentle, then Pineacres will rekindle those memories. And if you want your children to experience the same, then Pineacres is for them, as well. For years our cottage has been a place to connect with family and friends, a place to while away the hours in conversation, or catch up on our reading, or play a game of cards. If you like, it can be a respite from a world of incessant demands for your attention, a respite from the world of pixels and tiny screens. It's a place where sunlight drifts through the pines and the white birches sway in the breeze. A place where the sound of children's laughter competes with the waves rolling in on the beach. A place to gather stones and cook good meals and be present for one another. If it's true that for everything there is a season, then the summer is for Pineacres.
What makes this property unique
It's undeniable that the cottage's location is its prime attraction. Lake Michigan in all its moods is a giant presence there. But for some visitors, the cottage's charm rivals the lake as a reason for a journey. Little has changed at Pineacres over the decades. The fieldstone fireplaces are as solid as ever. The delicate paper lanterns that hang from the living room's exposed beams have survived. There's old, wavy glass in some of the multi-paned windows and for generations the cast iron, claw foot tub has been the place for children to take their Saturday night bath. Admittedly, the cottage is not to everyone's taste. The kitchen is well equipped but lacks a dishwasher. And the shower is perfectly fine but nowhere near luxurious. Pineacres harkens back to when Leland's Fishtown was not a tourist attraction but a genuine fishing port; a time when the boats were made of wood and the men were made of iron, rather than the other way around, to quote an old-timer. It's the cottage's similar lack of pretension that we love.
