The accommodation was excellent in lots of ways, location, convenient and lots of attention given inside the property. The only issue we had was the cleanliness! Unfortunately due to co-vid we weren’t allowed into the property until later, so extra cleaning could take place but unfortunately we would say wasn’t the best, mostly in the kitchen( cutlery, bread bin, nest of tables in the lounge) Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo

Our 3rd visit to James Retreat and our 7th to the apartments in the complex.

Our 3rd visit to James Retreat and our 7th to the apartments in the complex. James Retreat is clean, spacious, warm and cosy for the Lake District in Autumn. So convenient you can just leave the car for a week if you want to with the bus 2 minutes away and plenty of walks to hand. Knowing Keswick so well there are plenty of options to eat out if you wish. Due to Covid we didn't this time, but the apartment has everything you would require to eat in. However it would be nice to have a measuring jug in the kitchen too. A Beautiful dog friendly apartment with lots of space , the kitchen was well equipped ( could have done with a pint glass though ) . Excellent location with a very short walk into Keswick , and lots of longer walks can be found right on the doorstep . We will definitely be staying there again ( in fact we have booked for Christmas 2021 ) . Very clean and comfortable . Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo

The apartment, being dog friendly was well-equipped including washing machine and dishwasher and all cutlery and crockery. Supermarkets and local shops a couple of minutes walk away and plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars to suit every taste. Lake approx 10 mins walk and local park (ideal for letting dog have a run about) not far either. A real home from home.

It's not a cottage.

It's not a cottage. It's a flat which was very clean but it was in the middle of a lot of other people. We had our dog with us and the accommodation rules said we couldn't have her in the bedroom but as she is blind and deaf, she relies on knowing where we are and she is used to sleeping in our room so we had to defy that rule. She sleeps on the floor in her bed in any case. There are gardens around for her but again, these were public spaces and there are NO dog bins anywhere. We had to put the poo-bags by the car and collect them when we went out. There is no rubbish collection and although we were instructed to recycle there were no recycling bins close by. The instructions in the welcome book could have been clearer on this, I think. Keswick is breathtakingly beautiful, surrounded by hills and 100's of walks for even the most inexperienced walkers. Most restaurants, shops, and pubs are dog-friendly and dog water bowls were outside almost every shop. Podgy Paws rents out a dog pushchair which we rented for our dog as she is old and doesn't walk far these days (but we still do!) so that came in handy for the 10-mile circular walk around Derwent Water. The walk was a bit hairy in places with the pushchair but we made it! Also, parked at Under Skiddaw car park for the short trek to Latrigg viewing point overlooking Keswick and Derwent Water and another lake. Spectacular views and we stayed up there for over an hour soaking up the hot sun (I know!! What a treat that was!) and enjoying the view and watching the fighter jets flying below us. Tarn Hows and Buttermere Lake walks were also highly recommended and beautiful.

Overall this apartment was good.

Overall this apartment was good. Kitchen equipment from crockery to electrical equipment was excellent. I feel the owner has put a lot of effort into furnishing and equiping but sadly has been let down a little as the bed was king size and the duvet was just a double. Lots of dirt/dust behind bed and a good layer on bedside lamps. In an ideal world the cleaners should have more time to clean inbetween lettings. Also, I think it is diabolical to make a charge per person for towels when paying top end price for one bedroom apartment. I have never had to pay for towels before.

Lovely clean warm apartment beautifully decorated with a superb modern kitchen and bathroom.

Lovely clean warm apartment beautifully decorated with a superb modern kitchen and bathroom. Perfectly situated close to the town centre with it's pubs and restaurants yet very quiet. Very handy for the bus; we hardly needed to use the car. The dog would have appreciated a rug in the lounge but I can understand why there isn't one. Overall a great place to stay.

Lovely apartment.

Lovely apartment. Very clean, warm and comfortable. A lot larger than you would imagine. Beautiful bathroom and kitchen with everything one needs. Only downside we had was a note left on the door from a “resident” who complained about dog dirt on the communal area. The dog dirt in question was already there when we arrived on Monday afternoon. Any dog dirt deposited by our dog was picked up and disposed off immediately. Unfortunately, as is always the case, the note was anonymous and left us with no means of redress or explanation. We normally book accommodation that has a private garden and with hindsight we should have followed our normal practice. We certainly will in future. It will not deter us from booking through Cumbrian Cottages as we have done so for many years without any issues, but it will not be James Retreat or any similar accommodation.

Lovely, spotlessly clean cottage in a very good location.

Lovely, spotlessly clean cottage in a very good location.Pet friendly but they arw not alloud on the furniture or in the bedroom, only mentioning this as in a lot of cases dogs are used to sleeping in the bedroom with there owners. We were ok as my little dog is caged at night which we took it with us as well as some throws but might be a problem for some guests and especially with your pet being in a strange place.I didn't notice this policy before I booked. I would definitely recommend this apartment and we hope to return in the near future .
