About this property

Steam Carriage: 1926 Train Carriage, Otways

Step aboard Steam Carriage, a fully restored 1926 First Class railway carriage in the heart of Forrest. Velvet curtains, polished brass, and warm timber evoke the exuberance of the roaring 1920s. An unforgettable, immersive escape where you can slow down, explore every nook, and enjoy a genuinely different break from the everyday.

THE SPACE

Steam Carriage is a fully restored 1926 First Class railway carriage, tucked away in the township of Forrest, surrounded by the lush Otway Ranges. We love one-of-a-kind places, and this is our effort to create something a little different — a carriage that celebrates the elegance of the 1920s and the simplicity of the era. From polished brass and velvet curtains to warm, salvaged timber, it works with the natural beauty and craftsmanship of the original carriage rather than feeling forced or gimmicky.

It’s a place to slow down, explore every nook, and soak in history while leaving the world behind. A genuine break from the day-to-day, immersive and subtly transportive, thoughtfully put together so you can simply enjoy it.

HISTORY

Built in 1926 at Melbourne’s Newport Railway Workshop as First Class carriage 61 AW, Steam Carriage carried passengers throughout regional Victoria — surviving a train crash along the way. Between 1937–1980, it was converted several times between first and second class on routes from Melbourne to Sydney and other regional lines. Retired in 1983, it was transported by truck to Forrest, where it now resides. Lovingly restored by our team, the carriage preserves its craftsmanship and character, offering a one-of-a-kind escape steeped in history.

SLEEP

Master Bedroom: Two compartments long, queen bed, private outdoor bath

Second Bedroom: Small compartment, double bed

Third Bedroom: Single compartment, two thin single train beds (like caravan beds)

Sleeps up to six, but ideal for a couple or family of four

Rooms are close together, with very little sound insulation; consider guest combinations carefully:

A couple + up to four children

Two couples (if good friends)

Four adults

Six adults possible, but Steam is primarily a place to sleep

KITCHEN AND LIVING

The small but fully functional kitchen has a stove, oven, Italian-style coffee maker, French press, and all essentials. The cozy living space features a wood fire, books, and board games. No TV — some stream on their devices at first, but most discover they simply stop needing to.

Outside, relax in the garden with leafy trees, a hammock, and multiple seating nooks, including a covered outdoor area with BBQ.

FORREST AND THE OTWAYS

Forrest is a beautiful, quietly unhurried timber town — the kind of place that’s become harder to find. It sits on the edge of 100,000 hectares of national park, alive with birdsong and wildlife, and that is genuinely its greatest asset.

Otways Loft has direct ride-in ride-out access to over 70km of world-class singletrack across 36 trails — the Forrest Mountain Bike Trail Network is considered one of Australia’s top mountain biking destinations, with trails for every level from easy to challenging. It’s right on the doorstep. Forrest MTB Hire is open for bookings every day except Sunday — we recommend booking ahead or texting Michelle for last-minute availability.

Bush walks, waterfalls, Lake Elizabeth, Stevensons Falls and the Barwon River Reservoir are all within easy reach. The General Store is open daily, and Jen at Bodysmith — a beautiful little healing studio offering hot stone massage and Bowen therapy — is just a short walk from the Loft.

A note worth knowing — Regional Victoria is doing it tough at the moment and some businesses operate with reduced or changing hours. We do our best to stay across local openings and share the most up-to-date recommendations before your stay, though in a small regional town things can shift day to day. It’s all part of the slower rhythm here. The Loft is thoughtfully set up as a self-sufficient retreat — and guests who come prepared to cook, explore and unwind tend to have the best time.

Thirty minutes from Lorne and the Great Ocean Road. Twenty minutes from Birregurra.

HOSTING STYLE

We’re Fleur, Mike, and the team behind Dufflebird Getaways. With over 20 years of hosting, we care deeply about this space and guests who value character, detail, and a slower, considered stay.

Before arrival, you’ll receive our local guide. We can help shape your time — mountain biking, walking, long lunches, or simply switching off. Our trusted local team is nearby if anything is needed in person, otherwise we’ll leave you completely to your stay. Many guests return, which says it all.

COMBINING WITH OTWASY LOFT

Our neighbouring property, Otways Loft, is available for larger groups. Steam & Otways Loft together accommodate 10–12 guests (up to 14 max). Both remain private when booked independently. If booked together, access to the connecting gate is available.

GUEST ACCESS

The entire carriage and garden are yours, including the outdoor seating, hammock, and covered dining/lounge area

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE

Linen and towels included — just bring your beach towels. Beds made up to your preferences

Dogs welcome: Please notify us before arrival. We ask that dogs stay off furniture and beds, leaving the carriage trace-free. The yard is fenced but not dog-proof. Consider whether your pet suits our delicate furnishings

No smoking inside or candles — the orignial Smoking signs and gold lettering remain as a nod to its railway past

Great place to stay.

We enjoyed our stay here, it was surprisingly spacious given it's a train carriage. Very comfortable & clean. It was quite cold during our stay so the wood heater had lots of use. It has pretty much everything you would need, and it's something a bit different from most accommodation.
Response from VrboOwner on 23 Mar 2020
Thanks Geoff. The carriage is 25m long and 3m wide, so the floor space is 75m which is not that small. It is just thin and long. We have added two heaters since your stay.

Unique and charming accommodation

This old red rattler (now black) is a quirky, peaceful and centrally located place to have as a great launching place for some marvellous MTB riding or quite weekend retread, Loved it.

Thanks Vaughan for staying. You are welcome back anytime. It took a couple of years for me to appreciate those trails. Originally I thought the mountain bike trails were for serious mountain bikers, but was delighted to find that (like ski runs) the grading allows beginners and kids to find trails suitable to our skill level. It is now one of my favourite things to do when Im staying in Forrest. You can download trail maps at visitotways website.

Well appointed but not as private as you might think

Steam is beautifully presented, clearly much thought has gone into the fittings and fixtures and overall this property is lovely. The carriage sits on a fairly small property however so it didn't feel as private as I had expected. Also might be worth noting that although there is sleeping arrangements for 6 the living area would be very crowded with this number, Steam is definitely better suited to a couple.

Thanks for your comments Sara and glad you booking for two went well. We completely agree, Steam is best for a couple and we have gone into a bit of detail in the listing to explain this. Its also why we have sliding scale pricing making it less expensive for couples. Saying that we do have groups of four and six fairly frequently. With careful consideration the set up can meet the requirements of some groups. We think there are a lot of outdoor options to spread out. There are three outdoor table settings. Two of which seat six. One of the outdoor dining tables that seats six is undercover. There is also a wicker outdoor sofa setting undercover. There are two veranda chairs on the other side of the train and also two swinging chairs. Plus a large double hammock on the main lawn. We are pleased you appreciated the presentation and found the place to be well appointed.

Experience the charm of another era...

Once you board this beautiful train, you will feel transported into an era graced by Ladies and Gentlemen. Not only were my husband and I charmed, our two boys ran around for hours exploring every object of curiosity. Outside, they enjoyed splitting logs for the wood burner and swinging on the hammock, we really enjoyed these thoughtful touches. We found it surprisingly spacious inside, and Donna the caretaker is meticulous with her cleaning, from the cutlery to the top of the refrigerator, this place was spotless. The limitations of our boot mounted bike rack meant that we could only transport my husband and our boys bikes, but another thoughtful touch was that Fleur provided two complementary bikes, which meant we could go for a family ride together. It was a real joy, I had not intended to ride, but I'm so glad I did. There are so many scenic tracks here, all within riding distance from Steam Carriage. I felt at ease for my boys safety as they were all very well maintained tracks, and very few cars around. This was a perfect place to enjoy time together away from technology, I would recommend Steam Carriage without hesitation.
Response from VrboOwner on 23 Mar 2020
Thanks so very much Wai for your kind words and it was an absolute pleasure having you to stay. I will say though that we have removed mention of the 4 mountain bikes from our listing as much as we loved the idea of offering free bikes as a value add, we did find it a hard thing to orchestrate well, when we don't live close by. We think it is best to leave bike hire to the local shop in town ( Forrest Hire Bikes, a 2 minute walk form the carriage ) who are in a position to provide an excellent service. Mountain bikes used on those wonderful trails really should be serviced or readjusted/tweaked after each ride. The four bikes are still in the locked bike shed and guests are welcome to use them at their own risk but may need to spend some time making sure they are in good safe working order. So they are available but we no longer list them as a feature.

What a gem!

What a privilege it was to stay in such a unique space! The train was so artfully done and is full of quirky and whimsical touches. It was an experience just taking in all the details. It was spacious and cozy all at the same time and had absolutely everything we needed. Wines under the verandah are a must. Will definitely be back to this beautiful place!

Full of character

It’s a bit steampunk, it’s a bit Hogwarts Express, it’s all fun. In a little lane in sleepy Forrest is a complete old timber country train carriage converted into a snug accommodation. Being a carriage, everything is small, the one real drawback being no storage space. Being only 3 of us though, we used the third bedroom as a walk-in robe. It’s great for a family of 3 or 4 but you would have to be very close friends to have 4 or 6 adults! Other than that, it’s a wonderful spot. A high quality little kitchen, great shower, comfy beds, a leafy garden with BBQ and eclectic fittings make for a unique escape. Plus the new chocolaterie Platypi just up the road which you shouldn’t miss. A highly recommended stay.

Perfectly quiet, clean and quaint carriage in the heart of Forrest

Clean and well appointed accommodation tucked away off the main road. Well presented and close to facilities in the beautiful Otway Ranges. Excellent place to start your walk or food forage at the local cafes, micro brewery or chocolate shop. The dogs loved the smells of the yard and the close encounter with the local wandering pet sheep. Booking was simple and efficient and post leaving was a prompt.

Beautiful steam carriage 10/10

I overall loved my stay at the steam carriage. Fleur was so easy to work with and provided great customer service. It was really clean when I got there and super cozy. The description of the place was exactly as explained on the website. My children loved the Forrest General Store , because they could walk down the lane across and sleepy road and buy cheap old fashioned lollies. Overall 10/10 would recommend

Compact luxury

A wonderful place to snuggle up and unwind. The train carriage has a fireplace to keep you toasty warm and a shower that you never want to get out of. Since there is no tv its the perfect spot to disconnect, put some tunes on the amazing speaker and sip wine in front of the fire. The beds are comfy and the kitchen well decked out. A micro brewery and a chocolate cafe are within walking distance and there is a couple of friendly chatty goats down the lane. The owner called us the day we were due and gave us some valuable last minute tips and checked on our arrival time, offering to have the fire lit. We thoroughly loved staying here and couldn’t recommend it more highly.

Our favorite place to stay on our Australia trip!

We loved the luxurious yet cozy feel of the carriage, and everything we needed was provided. The fireplace – and nice stock of firewood – was fantastic with the chilly weather, and the comfy furniture was perfect. The renovation is extremely well done, and the property is clean and well cared for. The location close to the brewery and Bespoke Harvest, as well as multiple trails and scenic drives, was ideal.

Wow! Steam was breathtaking. My husband and our 2.9yr old son were over joyed when we pulled up at Steam. We had the best time staying in the cosy surrounds of Steam. Its rustic, romantic and full of charm! We loved being able to bring our dog with us and she loved exploring the yard! Steam is the perfect location, we did lots of nice walks and loved how close it was to the Brewery and Cafe! Perfect for everyone. Steam had everything we needed and more. We cant wait to come back one day!

Cosy train carriage in a beautiful town

We arrived in the dark and were still impressed with the train carriage awaiting us! It's an unusual place to stay, but is clean, warm and welcoming. We were fortunate that it was cold enough to want to use the fireplace and were happy with the warmth it provided the carriage. Fully appointed kitchen meant that we were able to cook meals as wanted (although with the brewery just a stroll away there is little reason to do so!). Our children were very comfortable sleeping in their single beds compartment whilst we took the main bedroom at the rear of the carriage. Forrest has a great historic walk through the town which is well signed and provides some insight into the history of the town. Well worth doing. We also enjoyed a couple of the local walks - one to the edge of Lake Elizabeth and another to see Stevensons Falls. Both achievable with two young children. Forrest brewery was a favourite for evening meals during our stay.

a gorgeous serene getaway, perfectly restored

Me and my 2 boys (6&8) thought the train carriage was so cool! Description was spot on, there was so much to explore in Forrest, and the carriage was walking distance to a lovely general store, yummy choc factory, tasty brewery and local pub. Recommend the 5km walk around Lake Elisabeth (look out for over 10 different species of cool coloured fungi in Autumn), only 7km away, and a drive to Stevensons falls only 20min drive away, easy to get to falls from car park, and great rock climbing in the river. The carriage was well restored, very comfy and cosy. We loved making a fire and playing board games outside on the table. Also loved watching the sunrise from the big bed with nice thick warm sheets. All the amenities were good, the brewed coffee was great! Even the hand soap and shower gel was lovely. And having no TV screen was perfect! We thought it was the best mini break, and already planning our next adventure! Thank you Fleur, the perfect host.

A nostalgic, comfortable, and unique place to stay

We had a wonderful stay in Steam Carriage. It was very comfortable and a delight to be in the surrounds of the old steam train. The children loved it. Forrest is a fantastic base for exploring the Ottway region by mountain bike, car, or using your own legs for the beautiful scenic walks. The Tree Adventure park was a great adventure. Fleur was a warm and responsive host. Can't recommend this experience enough!

“Not all those who wander are lost.” – J. R. R Tolkien
Remember that famous line from Alice in Wonderland as she heads down the rabbit hole into a strange new world of untold imagination.

“Curiouser and curiouser!”

Well that’s the way we hope you feel about our 10 unique wonderlands. Duffelbird’s flock of getaways are for those with a heart for adventure – places where you can unwind or unravel, let your existential selves hang free to ponder life and love, under the stars, away from the noise – immersed in nature.

Our hidden gems are rich in character and layered in mystery, no more than 2.5 hours out of Melbourne – a converted steam train in the Otways, a mid-century charmer on the fringe of an orchid forest, a glass fronted masterpiece overlooking the wild waters of Westernport – each of them tucked away in some of the most unspoilt corners of Victoria, waiting for you to explore with wide eyes and wonder.

Bring your well-mannered dogs. Let them roam free, (just not on the furniture) while you settle in to our sometimes quirky, often eclectic, always whimsical, hideaways.

Can you hear the water? The breaking waves? The cascading waterfall?
Can you feel the peace, the calm, the astounding beauty of Mother Nature wrapping you in a gentle embrace?

We’ve felt it too. At the ritual Burning Man in the Nevada desert, deep in the jungles of Costa Rica and atop the volcanic peaks of Hawaii.

And we want to give all the quirky travellers out there a chance to awaken that ‘wanderlust’ energy. Because we all need time out so we don’t go bonkers in the real world. Go on, escape the chaos, experience the enrichment of nature, the magic of complete abandonment, the inspiration of new surrounds. Let Dufflebird be your tour guide to a wildly curious life.
Rabbit hole to Wonderland, right this way.
