About this property

Classic Romantic Creek View D/T Cottage~ Walk to town & AT ~Relax on the Porch

Blue Heron Cottage sits on a bluff above Spring Creek, a renowned trout fishing stream in the Pisgah National Forest, where you hear the flow of the stream at all times of the day. While relaxing on the deck or within the house with the sliding doors open, we hope you find time to kick back and just be. A writer and artist dream spot to reinvigorate one's senses. Love birds and wildlife? This is a fantastic spot to watch for heron, osprey, eagles, beaver, and otter. All the modern amenities in a very laid back atmosphere. Nicely appointed 1920s bungalow located in downtown Hot Springs, North Carolina.

You will find everything you need in the house, such as a nicely stocked kitchen, linens, laundry, and wifi, while you experience the charm of Hot Springs and the proximity to all this area has to offer. From the cottage, you will be able to walk to the Appalachian Trail less than 1/4 mile from the house, natural hot springs spa (The Hot Springs Resort and Spa, one of the only on the Eastern side of the country), local brewery (top tier beer and tacos in a fun outdoor setting), famous local diner, restaurants, and more (rafting on the French Broad River). If you have more of an adventure up your sleeve, you can get to many other trails and destinations along with Asheville in less than an hours drive.

The cottage includes 1 spacious bedroom with a King-sized bed. There is a bathroom with a large garden tub and shower combo. The living room has views over the creek and a gas fireplace with a Smart TV for streaming your favorite channels. The kitchen is spacious and offers everything you need to eat in if you choose. Fiber optic internet service has been added so that guests have the best internet option in town. We would love to host you at the Blue Heron Cottage.

The cottage rental allows pets with an additional fee. We limit pets to dogs under 60 pounds and 1 dog per rental period.

Hot Springs is a great destination in all seasons! The weather is mild and roads are tended in the winter time. The Hot Springs Spa is open year-around for hot mineral soaks. Restaurants and shops are open as well, and we love to hike the Lover's Leap trail on cool, sunny days when things are a bit quieter around here.
Summer is a wonderful season to enjoy many things to do outside, including rafting and tubing and venturing up to Max Patch Bald.
Spring sees beautiful mountain wildflowers and hikers traveling through on the Appalachian Trail.
Fall never disappoints with endless potential to see the trees changing at different elevations and finishing your day with a fire and soak in the natural hot springs or a beer at Big Pillow Brewing.

Memorable view of Spring Creek

The Blue Heron Lodge is an amazing place to stay, with the large deck overlooking Spring Creek. We enjoyed the large spa tub and the gas fireplace. If you forgot something the Dollar General is in walking distance. We went to the resort for a 90 minute mineral hot springs spa overlooking the French Broad. We did a 2 hour hike with Llamas. Hot Springs is a friendly town. We enjoyed everywhere we went.

Unbelievably Perfect

Perfect getaway for two. The sound of the creek is so relaxing and the feel of the house is very rustic and cozy. The place is so much better than the pictures. We will definitely be back.

Rest and recuperation par excellence!

Superlatives abound; we are a fairly demanding couple with travel experience from dozens of countries around the world. Mart Helen and Marion's cottage in Hot Springs had it all from complete kitchen and toiletries to comfortable indoor seating, plus an extended deck overlooking the stream rushing just below. All of that plus excellent local, within walking distance restaurants and brewery. We will be returning!

Idyllic

This cottage was aptly named romantic and also sweet, placed in the bend of a creek in a quiet neighborhood. The summer rain was welcome as was the cottage in its simplicity and tasteful interior. We hope to return for longer in the future. Thank you!

Very nice cabin and host, but bad weather marred enjoyment

Hosts were very responsive. Unfortunately, bad weather knocked the power off for most of 2 days. Had to travel to another town to get hot food. Duke energy didn’t communicate well about the situation

Smoke Alarm Problem

Accommodations were fine. However, the problem with the smoke alarm was very disruptive, and cause us to lose a nights sleep. As I stated, the alarm began chirping around 1:00 am. It continued to chirp at 15 minute intervals until the owner arrived around 9:00 am. Needless to say, we were extremely tired. This affected our activities for the rest of the day. We believe that we should receive a rebate for a portion of our rental payment.

Wedding Guest Stay

The property is dated and old. It definitely has the old house smell and needs to be thoroughly deep cleaned and exterminated.- the a/c was a HUGE problem. there is no central air which is not specified in the listing. there is an a/c wall mounted unit in the living room. that is the only one to cool the entire home. there is no a/c unit in the bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. the living room unit does not cool the house. It was muggy and hot most of the time. we came for july fourth weekend where it was in the 80s and 90s daily. I would not have picked this home if i knew there was not any real a/c. we are from texas so we are used to heat but not without a/c!- There is a bug problem - spiders, cobwebs, other bugs in the house. It is a natural area so I understand bugs get in, but if there are cobwebs around the house that is a problem.- We sat in the backyard, but there are cobwebs off the gutters & black under the soffits. all needs cleaning.- comforter in bedroom was gross with hair on it and it needs washing- Bathroom had big problems - cobwebs/spiders/bugs, mirror old & needs replacement, towels that are provided are old and smell like mold (we even washed some of the towels and could not get the smell out. time to be thrown away and get a fresh set), the shower curtains need to be replaced as there is pink/black mildew on it, the tiles in the shower need to be scrubbed as there is pink/black mold on it, just overall updating would be nice.

Couldn't change my email address

Property was great. Vrbo systems, not so much. I got a note saying the information on location, key, etc. would be sent to my email. I was going to be out of town and not able to access that email. I tried to change it and your system couldn't handle that. I eventually got some phone numbers to call and got the information.

Exceptionally Pleased

My wife and I chose Blue Heron Cottage for our anniversary to Hot Springs and we were so thankful that we did. The hosts prepared us for Hot Springs with wonderful information and kept us up-to-date before we arrived (the town was having a planned power outage—caused no problems). Our view of Spring Creek was fantastic! We spent lots of time appreciating the roar of the creek immediately outside the cottage, which also lent some privacy. The house is the perfect size for two guests, with a decent-sized and well-stocked kitchen (sharp knives and even a cheese grater!) for cooking up dinners. We walked multiple times a day to downtown Hot Springs; you really are that close. The street the house was on was for the most part quiet, though. This was one of our favorite VRBOs of all time—and yet the price is very doable! Although we are adventurers and don't often go the same place twice, we would absolutely consider staying here again. Thank you, Mary Helen and Marion!

Beautiful quiet slice of heaven!!

I have to say that this beautiful quaint house is absolutely adorable! :-) from the moment I arrived I could see that I had found a slice to heaven in Hot springs North carolina! One of my favorite parts of this house is how wonderful the deck is that wraps around and hangs above the river below which you can constantly hear trickling down below.... which is music to my ears. When I was there all I wanted to do was be outside on that wonderful deck and I was constantly getting lost in all the beautiful nature.... the sounds and the wild life that made itself known to you gently and quietly. It was a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of life and I was able to feel and connect inwardly to my heart.... quiet my soul and enjoy being at one in such a beautiful location!! The Host went above and beyond their standard call of duty..... even prior to my arrival but even immediately after my arrival accommodating me immediately in any needs that I required! I would highly recommend this delightful property year-round to anyone who would like to escape and get lost in the beauty of the North Carolina mountains has to offer you! Nancy

This cottage was so beautiful we had a hard time leaving to see the sights. It’s perfectly furnished. It overlooks a bend in Spring Creek which I could look at for hours. Our Cockapoo loved the fenced in deck where she could view all the nature safely contained. It’s right in town and fully equipped. We walked by it for years while we were camping, and now we had the joy of experiencing it.

I would absolutely stay here again. Perfect getaway for my spouse and I while we were in town for a wedding. I loved that restaurants/stores/brewery were all a short walk away. The sound of the creek behind the house was also so relaxing.

I purchased the Blue Heron around 2010 as an investment in the town I have lived in since around 2000. When I bought the house, it was in pretty bad shape and I thought that I could update it while keeping the charm of the original structure. I have worked in hospitality since college when I moved to Hot Springs to help my parents run their bed and breakfast.

Why they chose this property

It is close to my house, as well as my family's. I enjoy how walkable it is and the friendly people who live in the town of Hot Springs.

What makes this property unique

The house is well cared for and tended to. I feel like guest can get really comfortable in this space while they are exploring the area. It can be used as a base camp for adventure, or its perfectly suitable to spend days just enjoying being cozy in a sweet little spot by the creek.
