About this property

Artful Lodging & Retreats Civil War Infirmary 2nd Fl'r 3 Bdrm Apt Montpelier VT

This sunny, beautifully decorated, fully furnished apartment is in an historic Civil War Infirmary building, part of the Sloan Hospital, and was rolled down the street from the Vermont College green in the 1870's, then fully updated with every modern convenience! The apartment is cozy during winter with loads of windows and sunshine, and cool in summer with A/C in the bedrooms if you feel you need it. The apartment includes a fully outfitted kitchen and bathroom with anything you might need. Hardwood floors add to the charm. There are 3 bedrooms - 2 rooms have Queen-size beds and 1 has a King. There is an additional cot available and one of the queen bedrooms has a couch for lounging on and can serve as a living room too. The landing area has loads of books and games, and I always put in special stuffed animals and toys suited to the ages of visiting children. Our backyard has a spectacular view of Camel's Hump and the valley with the capitol building and downtown. We welcome guests to sit and enjoy cocktails at sunset or have a barbecue. (Just ask so we can coordinate with our other guests.) The house is walking distance to downtown, very near the college green and VCFA campus, and many area attractions and resorts, including Stowe, Sugarbush, Trapp Family Lodge, and Bolton Valley (all 30-40 minutes drive). Kellogg Hubbard Library in town holds many events for kids, a local rec center has tennis courts, several ball fields and a pool. There is a reservoir for cookouts and swimming in summer, and many rivers and streams to play and fish in right in town. We have kayaks, nordic skis, snowshoes, and other sporting equipment we are happy to share. Montpelier is a great central location for day trips, and we are happy to be your guide. Check out the Montpelier Alive schedule and the city website, as well as Lost Nation Theater. Burlington and Lake Champlain are a 35 minute drive, and hiking trails are 20-30 minutes away to Camel's Hump and White Rocks/Hunger Mountain trailheads. The city circ bus stops regularly in front of the house and will quickly bring you to pick up groceries. We have two movie theaters in town as well! This is truly your home away from home!
If our calendar is full, please contact me as we have two other apartments here: listings #971889 (Mountain-View Studio +1 Bdrm) and #614274 (1st Floor just below this apt). Please note that all of the apartments can be rented for a group discount. Contact me for details!

I love sharing my home with guests like you! As my four children grew up the house was too big for me, so I decided to rent out to guests our spare rooms. I have created the apartments to be themed around the arts of different cultures, with real antiques I have collected through the years. This allows me to share my art collections and spread world cultural awareness, my favorite topic in education. I am an Artist and Art teacher and offer classes to my guests as well in my studio space. We love to share ideas with our guests about our favorite places to go, so please feel welcome to call and discuss any questions you have while planning your trip.
We hope you'll stay here, and look forward to hearing from you!
If you have a larger group, you may want to consider renting all three apartments, and just mention this in your inquiry!

Why they chose this property

Our home was the Commandant's house at the Sloan Hospital, a Civil War Infirmary located down the street and active during the last 1.5 years of the Civil War. In the late 1860's the building became part of a Methodist Seminary, and then was sold and rolled down the street on logs to its present location. I am an architect and designed and built the back addition to the home, fully updating it and using materials which well matched its history.
People who stay here just love it, and the central location both in town and in the state. It is about a ten minute walk downtown to hear live music or see a movie. Day trips can easily be planned in all directions to see many wonderful natural, historic, and tourist sights and attractions.
I am told the beds are extremely comfortable, as well as the bedding, and take a great deal of time carefully cleaning between all of my guests, doing the work myself.
We really enjoy our guests, and can't wait to meet you!

What makes this property unique

Our house is on a beautiful quiet walking street, and centrally located in town. It is a ten minute walk to downtown, and quite near to Stowe and Sugarbush resorts, as well as to Burlington's airport and Lake Champlain. There is a city pool and reservoir you can bring our kayaks to. Hiking trails are 5-30 minutes away with spectacular views. There are lovely restaurants a walk away, as well as live music, and terrific bookstores and cafes.
